Assessment and diagnosis

The evaluation request is now done online by registration on our site. When opening an account you will receive a confirmation email then you will be able to enter the information for a file, or even more if you have references for several children in your family. An explanatory video, of the evaluation process, will be sent to you so you understand the process. We emphasize that the evaluation of the adult requires the presence, for the first appointment, of a person who knew she/he when was 4 and 5 years old, otherwise it will be impossible to proceed.

Below some general information to know before applying for an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment.

The assessment for an ASD is now done in French or English, for children (from 2 years old) and adults living in Quebec. Please specify before the evaluation if you need it in English. Our site and the collection of the anamnesis will soon be translated.

For the evaluation process at CEVAM, a reference request from the attending physician addressed to CEVAM or CEVAM psychiatrists with the following indications:

  • The name of the person to be assessed with the Medicare number and date of birth
  • Evaluation for ASD as to be indicated
  • The main clinical signs that suggest an ASD
  • Significant antecedents (if relevant).
  • Le numéro de téléphone ainsi que le courriel du patient (parents)
  • The name of the doctor requesting the assessment and his license number.

*All non-compliant requests will unfortunately be rejected.

Regarding the first visit, Dr Billon, psychiatrist/child psychiatrist, conducts the ADI-R questionnaire (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised). The person who is evaluated, child or adult, must be accompanied by a person who has witnessed their childhood (mother, father, brother, sister …).

Following the first appointment, our team will inform you of the procedure to follow as to the possibility of future meetings.

There is no fee for the evaluation (ADI-R and ADOS) nor for the report.

Appointments usually last between 60 and 90 minutes. For children and teenagers, please do not bring a tablet it would disturb your child's attention during the exam. Subsequently, for the delivery of the report (which may take a few weeks), a first version that you can make comments is emailed to you before the signed final report.

THE PRODUCTION OF THE DIFFERENT CERTIFICATES (GOVERNMENT, TAXES, GRANT APPLICATION, INSURANCE, ETC.) WILL BE CHARGED TO THE ADVISOR PRICES BY THE ASSOCIATION OF PSYCHIATRIC DOCTORS OF QUÉBEC AND CARRIED OUT ONLY IN THE THREE MONTHS FOLLOWING THE DELIVERY OF THE REPORT. OTHER CERTIFICATES SHOULD BE SUBMITTED TO THE TREATMENT PHYSICIAN.

As we receive a large number of emails at info@cevamtl.com, it's important to mention, in all your communications with us, the name of the child or the person to be evaluated (in object or other). This facilitates the exchanges and makes it possible to answer faster.

Intervention with the person with ASD and their environment

Unfortunately, the evaluation departments is very busy and our staff couldn't develop a sustained practice in patient follow-up. However, we propose interventions in the home and school by our specialized nurse, as well as psychological support by our trainee psychologist for the patients but also parental coaching to support the revelation of the diagnosis and for the implementation of psycho-educational tools . A neuro-psychologist collaborator is assistant to our team because of her specialization in TSA and her evaluations are very helpful in clarifying the diagnosis and the axes of intervention. These different services are delivered in a private setting not covered by the RAMQ but frequently reimbursed by insurance. Receipts will be issued in this sense but it is up to you to check this possibility.
